Honda civic making strange sound when accelerating

My P reg Honda Civic LS is making a strange metallic sound....not too loud....when i press the accelerator at speeds between 20-35 mph. The sound stops at higher or lower speeds. Any guesses at what could be wrong and what will fix it. Thanks

Could be one of many things without looking at it.

But could be slack fan belt, worn wheel bearing, binding brake pad or grit between brake pad and disc.

Check tension on fan belt.  Get mechanic to check wheels for wear. How are brakes behaving any noises when braking ?

Is it a squeal, whine, rumble or tapping and where does it sound like it's coming from. i.e. uinder the bonnet, from the wheels front or rear of the car. Any other clues to help narrow it down.??

If its coming from the exhaust area. It could be a crack has developed on the heat shield of the exhaust, just under the gear stick area...it vibrates with revs and gets gradually worse. We had to take our car back to have the exhaust replaced, luckily it was still under guarantee. The guy said it was a common fault.

sounds like the exhaust heat shield, just take it off but don't burn yaself lol... thats its only purpose..

I used to have a Honda Civic Coupe 1.6i SR VTEC.  It's difficult to specify what sound you're describing without listening to it.  Common noises are the catalyst heat shield or the catalyst itself.  The front pipe flex can also make a noise.

Have you tried blipping the accelerator?  Or slowly increasing the RPM until you hear any noice? 

If you can't hear anything by doing this then it might even be a problem like how FastBarry described.

Yes it was the heat shield. kwik Fit did something to it for free. Noise has disappeared. thanks for the answers

If you turn up the volume on the stereo, the grating sound becomes inaudible. Problem solved!
