is it possible to buy just a recorder for my already built in digital tv? or do i have to buy a combined? therefore having 2 digital boxes on one tv?

Better to have a digital tuner in the recorder, so you can record one channel while watching a different one.
Don't forget your old video recorder had its own tuner too - that is how you could record one programme while watching another, or record with the television switched off.
An old video wouldn't be any good - pre digital tuner. You CAN use it to record, but to do so you'd need the TV on which defeats the object. Really the best bet is to by a twin tuner digital recorder. Massive storage on them - with mine I rarely watch anything live because I have so much on there.
That was my point. A recorder without its own tuner is not user friendly. Tv has to be left on, on the channel you are trying to record. Pointless.
Even the old video recorder had its own tuner.
