actually look at the cards they write for Christmas before putting pen to paper and writing them.
My friend whose husband died 3 weeks ago , and then her cat was run over a few days later has just received a card from someone she knows, which has on the front in big gold letters "Have a fantastic Christmas".
She is in tears, I feel so mad , for her that I could punch their lights out.
Insensitive or what ?

We do not send Christmas cards!
Let me qualify that.
We have not done so now for about 35 years.
We make a Christmas card list (an extensive one, given our very large family etc)
We estimate the average price of the cards we would have sent.
We add on the cost of postage.
We then make out a cheque for the amount and send it to a charity.
This way we ensure that the money gets to the charity direct, not chanelled through some dubious "Charity" Christmas cards.
Oddly enough, every New Year someone ALWAYS thanks us for our Christmas Card,so it proves nobody really notices whether we send them one or not.LOL
