Where is the best place to get Euros for a holiday this week

I am going on holiday on Tuesday and wondered where the best place was to get my Euros before I went.

I always get mine from the Post Office but go online and check out a few of the rates......someone said M&S were good.....

This is a frequent question. Since rates vary from day to day it's impossible (without actually checking all of the current rates) to guarantee that any one place will offer the best deals. However Marks & Spencer is frequently recommended as one of the best places to buy Euros.

If you've not got an M&S with foreign exchange facilities near to you, most people recommend the Post Office. Also Tesco often has some good deals on currency exchange, particularly when exchanging fairly large sums.

However it's usually best to get your Euros abroad, simply by using your debit card at an ATM. Some banks don't charge for overseas cash withdrawals (e.g. the Nationwide FlexAccount offers free overseas cash withdrawals). Others do, but the charge is usually more than offset by the better exchange rate.

Going online will find you the online rates which are normally better than those in a shop - but beware of delivery charges.

In the High Street there really is no substitute for walking around checking rates - they vary from day to day depending on how competitive a particular outfit wants to be.

For example a few weeks back I landed up in the Coop looking for currency. Theirs was the worst rate in town. I remarked on this and they offered to match the best (I kept quiet about it not having any in stock....)

Beware of places offering a better rate but charging commission, you can end up with less Euros than going to somewhere that doesn't charge commission if you don't work it out properly.
