Biker was head-butted - police have charged offender with battery.....what's the penalty and/or compensation?

Battery is common assault. Penalty depends whether first offence..
The assailant will have to go to court and the magistrates will make a decision based on the circumstances of this offence and any previous convictions. The punishment for this type of offence would be a community order which could be unpaid work or supervision. These punishments would be supervised by the Probation Service.
