Apologies for asking so early on this but i have gone as far as I can.
Clue is - Young salmon; some mums did it for children in winter.(5)
I have S?W?N which I am sure of.
Chambers(10th) gives the following -
SEWIN or SEWEN [n] the Welsh and Irish name for a sea-trout grilse.
It would appear that one of the above is the answer but I can't see it in the clue.
Any thoughts or explanation would be gratefully received.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all
can only suggest that years ago some mums used to sew mitts onto string for their kiddies so they didn't lose their gloves. (I almost strangled myself once lol) Seasons Greetings :~)
Think this is Sewin...many many years ago children's undergarments - vest, liberty bodice's etc - were on for the winter (same ones) and they were not removed until spring. Think the sayng about not casting a clout until spring is out has something to do with it,
Happy New Year to you too. This is the only clue I'm stuck on because, like you, I don't get the second part of the clue. Hope someone can point us in the right direction.
