Computer Running Slow Now
20 Answers
Hi there,
I downloaded the CCleaner recommened from a ABer from this website. I cleaned some things (sorry I don't know what it cleaned, probably cookies etc). But now my PC is running really slow. I've checked for viruses as well.
Can anyone help as my PC was quite fast until now...
Thank you for your help,
muchlovex

Don't know how much you know about puters but try this and post back.
Press Ctrl/Alt/Delete to get the task manager up. At the bottom of the window let us know how many processes are running.
Also, what virus/spyware scans you did and when you say slow do you mean things like opening files and stuff or web browsing.
Colin.
Slowdown could be due to many reasons, it's just a process of elimination and a little 'tweaking'

Well allowing for maybe 4 or 5 processes that you are using at the minute and (varys from personal preferences) 10 to 20 system/network/local processes, if you do the maths i think it = about 25 processes running away in the background that you don't need and hogging you're system resources.
Well the starting point here is to identify what you need and what can be stopped.
Google is you're best friend here so search for each item and make a note of it and if you want it to be running or not.
Next you have to stop the processes that are not necessary. Just right clicking on the item in the task manager and ending process will do just that but on next boot up they will all return.
So a bit of jiggling with 'start up' should help you here.
Will continue in about 20mins got to nip out.

jiggle at your own peril
if you have a 100% CPU useage ... you have a problem ... forget the 50 processes (yes they will slow things ... but not as much as you are experiencing)
the lappy I'm using now has 35 processes running.
commit charge 405/2395 ... and a cpu useage of 2-11%
something is seriously wrong with your machine (or the virus scanner is running ...)
in task manager ... look at processes click on the top column CPU twice ... you've now sorted the processes by cpu useage - with the exception of system idle process ... can you see any running above 10%?
from what you say ... it's not a virus (not exclusively anyway)
download both

install and scan (twice)
also answer sparko - what virus scanner?

Thanks for jumping in there trolly. Was waiting for a reply from lovex who (no disrespect) doesn't understand much about puters so i didn't want to blind with science and just make things very basic.
Depending on the reply and with the gambling sites opening, a little tuition on house cleaning followed by a 'jiggle' to stop all the crap starting up and getting the running processes/cpu usage down.
Basic stuff to a lot of people on here but for some it's a seriously major issue. That's why they post here.
Rebuild??
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication

Sparko
I heard you the first time ...., no need to repeat!! ;-)
absolutely right .... I always do try to keep it simple ...
but some things can't be avoided .... much managed to load ccleaner .... a scanner isn't any more complicated to d/l and install
an ad scanner will probably clear the problem ...
but it's your party ...
>>Thanks for jumping in there trolly....
on a public group like this ... you need to make it plain that you want to have exclusive control.
I'm now waiting with baited breath to see your workround
lead by example sparks ... dazzle us

Aww sparko must be shy.
much ... you are going to have to byte the bullet and download a spyware scanner (it's no harder than installing ccleaner .. which you've already done.
And while there are no guarantees ... it almost probably will cure the problem in a few minutes.
use the links above ... shout if you get stuck
