Sorry to be so blunt, but do female animals menstruate? My brother and I disagree and I don't know how to confirm either way. This follows a discussion about female dogs as pets and the problem if they menstruate. Anyone know the answer.

Yes, they do menstruate.

Generally, no. Some scientists believe the great apes, including chimpanzees and orangutans shed the uterine lining regulary, rather than experiencing oestreus. All female mammals come into "heat", but this varies from species to species. Many larger animals only come in to oestrus once per year and during that time, there may be some minor vaginal discharge but it's not a true"period".

Here in the western U.S., we breed cattle in the fall. This is the only time the female will accept the bull so as to have spring born calves...

They don't menstruate in the same way that women do, but female dogs do bleed when they are on heat.

Personally I think that it is unfair that all other animals get off the hook when it comes to PMS, period pains, heavy periods and periods in general.

And I have yet to discover another animal who has to shave its legs and other bits.

Dogs as pets; seasons needn't be a problem as unless you're intending to breed from the b1tch she should be speyed anyway to avoid unwanted litters. She will not then come into season.
IMO All dogs should be neutered unless owned by registered breeders to reduce the obsene number of abandoned dogs that are destroyed.
