I would opt for a Discovery or the more rugged Defender anytime. Avoid JEEP at all costs!!!!

It depends what you want it for. Mud-plugging or just for slippery road conditions in winter?

Or nipping down to Sainsbury's after dropping the kids off at school.

Sorry, don't mean to infer that this is would you would do, but it certainly strikes me that this is what most of them are used for!

For serious off road use it has to be a landy, preferably a Defender, if you are really after a so-called 'soft-roader' I would go for a Freelander in preference to a Discovery, much better built and nicer to drive on road. The Td4 engine is the pick, avoid the very silly V6 option, (19mpg!) Of the rest, the Subaru Forrester is a good choice, especially with the Impreza turbo engine, and the Legacy outback is an unconventional choice if you dont really need something as big as the others here. Mitsubishis Shogun is an OK bet too, good off road and OK on, and very roomy in five door format, but a bit of a tank!

If I wanted a dedicated 4x4 then I would go for a Land Rover 90/110 in a turbo diesel variant.  If I could afford more then a Range Rover.

A friend has owned a Jeep Wrangler and just reordered another one.  I didn't realise how reasonably cheap they are and how good performance they have - they can out accelerate most sportscars!
