we don't live far away from the marshes and river, but we've never seen them flying over our house and garden.

Are they looking for food?
In my ex's old house, we would see the heron come down at first light and sit on the edge of the pool. Tony had some massive koi carp outside the back of the property, and eventually realised the merits of a pool net, after seeing the heron fly off with one of his babies one morning.
Maybe they can't use the roads due to the snow?

I love having a good ol' debate. So is it going further away from its home to find food? I wouldn't have thought the river would freeze, what other stuff do they eat?
