My gran told my mum when she was younger, when you drop a dinner knife on the floor= A Man will come to visit. Fork=Woman. Spoon=Child.
I have no idea how it came about, but it freaked me out until I figured a way from stopping any unwanted vistors.
What ever you have dropped, wash it but leave it in the sink, don't put it back with the other dishes.
