How long do flags have to remain at half mast (eg. the ones that are flying for the London bombings)?  Is there a set time or is it a disrcretionary period of time?

Flags flown at half mast are a sign of mourning, and if there is an official period of mourning, they are returned to normal afterwards.  If no period of mourning, the funeral is often used.  In this case there is no official period of mourning, and the funerals are being held as and when possible.  At least one local council decided to fly them  until 14 July which seems suitable.  In the absence of these defined periods, I have to suggest that a suitable time to end the gesture is when you feel that you have properly expressed your respect.

Grunty beat me to it. That's what I would do.
