Two neighbours have frozen water pipes! So no water, can't use the loo ect ... One of the neighbours a young woman with children said she'd left the heating off last night as she couldn't afford to keep it on through the night while they were sleeping!

our council have never heard of grit its like an ice rink here

its minus 90 :(
Is'nt having heating on during the night a very new thing?

As unpleasent as it might have been (though I don't understand why it would be) I hardly think your neighbour with the children would have perished in their beds provided they were well covered and suitably dressed.
If your council had invested heavily in grit, snow ploughs, heated roads etc and were prepared for anything but it didn't snow, you would be moaning about them wasting your council tax money! its a balancing act that they can't win
Have to agree with telephone I'm afraid.

I happen to think the girtters are doing a stirling job with the limited resources available ot them. If we want more, that will come with a hefty tax increase and I for one would rather suffer a few weeks of snow and ice than see less of my wage than I already do each month.
hi Sachs and all - my kids school was open today and i played the cruel mother insisting they go when a lot of others werent going - there were no classes as a lot of teachers and pupils didnt turn up so they were sent home around 11 and we still have not received a text from the school about today or tomorrow. I remember heavy snow about 30 years ago and I walked to work - about 10 miles. I must have been made of sterner stuff !
Agree BOO and telephone -I live East of Scotland -high above sea level and we have snow-ploughs and snow-cutters sitting idle for most of the year but they are used and are included in our budget as we are guranteed bad weather.
Think its way worse down south as your councils dont have those measures in place as in the main they would be redundant.
Even given the extremely low temps we have had I dont have the heating on at night-bed is warm enough.
I don't have heating on either Dris, wouldn't dream of it during the night to be honest. if your cold in my house, you get an extra duvet, get to keep your dressing gown on and have a hot water bottle ;-)
usually the heat builds up and there is no need for it to be on during the night - we never have the heat on in our bedroom anyway - (no smart comments)
Bloody hardened northerners... If I can't sit in my room in a vest top in the middle of a snow storm then frankly it's utterly diabolical and heads will roll! ;0P

(I had a blanket on in Australia in the evening when the temperature dropped to eighteen degrees.. I think I may actually be some form of lizard).

I'm wearing more clothes in bed than I usually do out of it.........and I have to agree with B00. Wrap the little un's up nice and warm and throw your faux fur coat over them. My son would have loved to have worn a hat and mittens to bed :o)
Ahhh southern soft jessy ;-)

Welcome home CD, left you a couple of messages on FaceBook.

Anyhoo, this whinging about the weather is doing my box in to be honest. It's January in the UK, we don't live in the Bahamas, of course it's sodding cold- were we expecting anything else?
Aye... pass me one of your whippets to burn on the fire eh ;0)

I've just been going through me FB stuff lass, and 'yes, way!' Lol...
I wore a cardigan to bed last night - really heats things up !! My daughter and husband were both too warm so the insulation in this house must be wonderful
We leave out heating on all the time, its on a thermosat so the temp remains constant. Our house is very well insulated but If we turned it off at night then it would only have to be on more in the morning to warm it back up. dont see the point in turnung it off

BOO,
I don't know if leaving the heating on overnight is a new thing although over the last few days I personally have done just that.
The young family without water/ toilet fascilities, no they wont perish but yes I imagine it's not very nice.
Telephone, the council 'haven't ' adequately gritted! fact! Of course the gritters are doing the best they can with what they have been given. I don't mind a tax increase & less wage if our roads are safer for everyone.
Jackthehat?
I'm not moaning by the way BOO.
