I've solved most of the puzzle - except 10D and 17A and think I've found one anagram and most single letters. However - I'm really stuck on sorting out the rest of the jumbled words! Any tips?
Hi cupid, for 10d I have deckle edge and 17a atok. I've come to a standstill with this now. Stuck on across 7, 11,18,20,19, 29, 31,37 and 40, any help or hints with any of these might kick start me again.
7ac is a jumbled word, but it's well hidden. The definition is the first three letters of the clue, the jumble the next seven letters. The first two words of 31ac are another jumble. Those two might give a hint to the theme. Appropriate for this week. 18ac is a South African word. It's in Bradford.

Thanks judypark. Makes sense now! Am assuming you want hints rather than answers so:
In 11 the bovine you need is an OX; 19 - the hairstyle is a DA; 29 could make your eyes water!; 31 - think "survey"; 37 start with a make of car; 40 could make you happy.
turnerjmw - that's what I thought too.
Many thanks both, have now been able to work out the theme so with a bit or tweaking and your help, should be able to solve the rest of the clues. Have a hunch that 11a is trioxide? Long time since my Uni days though. Lol, my Chrissy present to dearly beloved was the latest Bradfords, 8th Edition. I'm still leafing through my dog-eared 7th.
You're welcome judypark. I've now soved everything (including the blanked out letters and the title) - apart from the jumbled words from the down clues. Any tips anyone?
The down clues you're looking at for jumbles are 2dn, 6dn, 16n. The way the jumbles link together for the five items is 1ac-35ac (6,3 to give a 9 letter word), 14ac-31ac (5,6), 27ac-2d (5,6), 16dn-6dn (3,3 to give a 6 letter word), 7ac (7).
Thanks turnerjmw. I agreed with you on all the links with the across jumbles but was thrown by 6dn and 16dn as I'd forgotten rotter could have another meaning! Doh!! Am happy now!
Turner: not a case of ignoring the S in 11a - it denotes 'has'. So the clue is to be read: T has WEIRD (anag) about OX with the W extra, as you say. This construction tells you that the T must be at the front as it can't be involved in the anagram.
