jackknifing lorries

about 20years ago( poss more) there was a device that could be fitted to articulated lorries that stopped this occurrence, doesn't seem to have taken off ?
it did prove to work 100% it was in fact a type of disc brake fitted to the trailer "swivel connection" that locked it in the straight position and stopped it jackknifing when braking,
anyone any info on this

Back in the sixties, the anti jackknife devices were quite widespread but then in those days the tractor unit and trailers were much smaller and lighter. The device worked quite well but the problems created when going on twisting and narrow roads were never resolved satisfactory .The devices were gradually replaced with,as sddsddean says, anti- lock...

Hi, the device I have never heard of, If this sort of device was fitted to an artic the Unit + trailer would become an IN-LINE 44 ton Rocket, there would be no flex only a rigid 5th wheel coupling ( That's where the trailer meets the unit, Excuse the expression Lady's, It's the pin meeting the jaws of the 5th wheel & locked in position when a safety clip is inserted to the Pull Handle where you pull to release the Jaws for the driver to drop the trailer when the legs have been lowered.

it was on tv a long while ago and it was a brake device which was included in what i call the swivel device (the coupling) it locked up when braking hard to stop it jacking, better a 44 ton rocket going straight rather than taking half a dozens cars with it as it slides sideways
it did stop jackknifing on test and it was taken up by a big fleet somewhere but wondered if this still in production

Perhaps it's time the AJK device was updated and fitted along with the other systems
