Replies seem to suggest CLABBER, which can mean mud as well as, more commonly, curdled milk.
My point is: Why does the compiler not make the clue "Mud" (instead of "Earth") or "Room" (to give the unambiguous answer CHAMBER, which fits the given letters just as easily?
I don't see it as a rewarding mental challenge when the answer is an extremely obscure word which, for most of us, is impossible to summon.

I agree. Every now and again there's the odd clue where there are either two or more possible answers and sometimes, like today, neither answer is really spot on. In this instance I went far clabber.
