making your own short film

Actually short film is probably over stating it, I want to do a short spoof of Bridget Jones for my mates hen night, I am in the process of writing it.  My question is, does anyone have experience of doing this sort of thing? are there any pitfalls to watch out for? any tips? I want to make it as good as i can.  I have use of an editing suite after i've done the shots, but again this is the first time i've done it. tia x
