do ipods have speakers?

i don't mean the docking station thing.
I have suggested an ipod for my 16 year old's birthday but he said he would prefer a fancy mobile phone instead.
The main reason being that he can't share the listening/watching with his mates.

I don't really want to fork out for a phone with features he'll never use. he doesn't need the camera and rarely texts!

I wondered if ipods have evolved with a speaker in them now.

the speakers were added to the iPod touch for gen3, it's easy to tell the difference, the one with speakers has volume buttons on the left side, the ones without speakers have no buttons on the left side.
