I live on the 4th floor of a block of flats. Somewhere in our building is an ants nest and they are getting in everywhere, kitchen, bathroom, lounge etc. How can I get rid of them safely? (I have a cat). Plus I don't live in England so any products might be difficult to find. I've tried talc and bay leaves (which I read somewhere) but they still come in.

See if you can buy Panant. It's a Japanese product. You sprinkle a few drops on the ground the ants frequent.
Ants find the taste irresistable and carry it back to the nest to feed their young. Definitely works. Good luck.
Jeyes fluid works, though it'll only work in your apartment.
Providing there are no children in the surrounding flats you could get standard ant powerder mix it with sugar, the little blitters will take the sugar coated poision down to there cribs and kill the moma !!!!!!
As a quick fix try fly spray on the ant run.
