I need advice on how to safely remove studs securing the seatpads on my dining room chairs.

I take it these are like an enormous press-stud? - in two parts, one attached to the base of the chair-seat, the other on fabric tabs?
If so, try gently putting a flat-bladed screwdriver under the rim of the upper part and lever gently to prise the two parts apart. The key is to avoid putting pressure on the fabric tabs, which may tear.

Yes buildersmate, they are exactly as you described. I shall employ that method, taking care not to tear the material, or indeed mark the wood. I fear that I may make some indentations! Thank you.

I managed with a flat-bladed screwdriver. It was a tad fidgety however I did not make too many dents except to my fingers! I have the most exquisite fabric to recover the chairs.
