I still reckon it could be Grant. Nobody would suspect because he's supposed to be in Portugal. But I believe they are paving the way for him to come back for x amount of episodes.

He killed himself. He took poison (knowing he was dying anyway) and timed it so he would keel over in the Vic. He placed himself in a position so he would strike his head on the way down. By doing this he was having the last laugh on all the people that hated him.
