You'll never get everyone to agree but most people (myself included) are firmly of the belief that there's no point in paying for any commercial programs. The free stuff is at least as good. (It's often said that software such as Norton or McAfee is actually far worse than any of the free stuff, because those programs tend to be 'resource hungry' and slow down your PC).
The most popular antivirus program with AB contributors has, for a long time, been AVG Free Edition:

However, several people seem to have experienced problems with the latest version. This has resulted in lots of people switching to Avast! (I've made the switch myself, but solely because I'm still using Windows ME, which is no longer supported by AVG):

Whatever you choose, remember that you should never have two anti-virus programs running simultaneously. Also remember that you'll need a decent firewall. (Zone Alarm Free and Comodo are the most popular free programs with AB users). An anti-spyware program is also a good idea. (AdAware 2008 Free and Spybot S&D are among those recommended by ABers).
