How do you train a thick cat to use a catflap? Weirdly, my cat has cracked it for coming back in but he sits in the kitchen looking out through what he thinks is his private window on the world and only goes out through it when I lift the flap right up for him which kinda defeats the object!
Or try sticking your head through it, to show him it works both ways ! I tried that with a dog flap once. I got stuck. The dogs enjoyed the lesson. I think they learned but it's hard to tell, when a dog's laughing that much.
Thanks, everyone. I did the bit with dangling some ham inside and out which worked for the coming in. However, about 5 minutes ago he took the plunge and went out through it for the first time so I'm fingers crossed his little brain will remember it for next time.
I had the same problem years back when I put a catflap in for a new rescued cat - she couldn't get the hang of it at all. I had to show her by sticking my head through it - the people working at the Coop opposite though it was hilarious. I hope yours has got the hang of it now - he probably just didn't realise it was his own route to use - good luck!
lol at Boxtops...you must have a very large cat flap or a very small head to get it through a cat flap.... I know there are different sizes...but still...lol
