27a Payment to traitor in residence abroad(7). Answer is 'pension' (almost certainly). Obviously takes care of 'payment' & 'residence abroad' but where does the 'traitor' come from? Sorry to keep doing this kind of thing . . . . any help please?

One meaning in Chambers is " an allowance of money as a bribe for future services" - presumably one could bribe a traitor ?
