Your passport needs to be valid for the duration of your visit to the US as indicated in this list.

If your passport is close to its expiry date, it may not be a machine-readable one and you will need a visa.

If it is machine-readable, you will probably qualify for the visa waiver scheme.

All current passports which were issued in the UK are machine readable. If you obtained your passport overseas it may not be.

You can apply to renew your passport up to 9 months before expiration and have the extra time creditted to the new one.
