I appreciate you got conflicting advice in your last question, but it might be worth connecting the filter to the end of the extension lead, as long as you don't then connect a phone to the start of it with a splitter. In theory, all you're doing is moving the socket closer to the computer, which makes very little difference to an electron! You do need to think about the distances involved, especially with an inexpensive extension lead, as you will suffer losses, but the distances you're talking about are pretty small (as long as you're only using a lead long enough for the job and not one of those big reel things with just a bit unwound!).
My brother had exactly the same problem. His PC is about 20 feet from the wall socket.Every time he connected the modem to a USB port he got the usual mesaage that a new device was found, but he simply could not connect to the internet. After much messing round it was discoved that the modem Wannado had sent him was faulty. They sent him a new one and it worked fine.Perhaps your modn is faulty.
