mucky pond

ive two or three frogs that have come to live in my pond which is great , however they seem to stir up any muck from the bottom of the pond making the water very murky .Do i need a better filter to keep the water clear ? any suggestions please

Try a barley wrap - they come in all sizes to accomodate any size pond and they aren't expensive. It should clear the water nicely

thanks for the sggestion spangle , sorry to sound thick but im fairly new to this game and ive no idea what a barley wrap is ?

I've seen them in different forms - sometimes in a net and the larger ones seem to be tied together with raffia or something, it attracts all the gunge from the pond and as far as I know is quite literally barley. If you go to a store that stocks all kind of pond accessories they will be able to point you in the right direction. The best thing about them is they won't harm any of your pond life.

Hi Traceykaz,

Ordinary straw from broken up bales is often used in small lake/pond fisheries to reduce algae build-up but I don't know the process that makes this work except that it moves about like a free hoover from the wind therebye stopping algal and weedmats forming-anyway  I guess you wouldn't want a bale of hay in your pond ,chuckle!

More seriously,I would let the frogs make the water murky (it's partly a defensive mechanism to stop predators seeing the eggs) and wait for it to settle.A little muddiness also stops the buildup of anoxic gases in the mud such as methane which will kill off a lot of the natural pondlife.
