PC monitor for a Compaq Desktop Pc

Hi

I need to replace my PC monitor for my compaq Desktop pc, The monitor that needs replacing is a compaq brand one as well, that came with the desktop,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me, Do I need to be another Compaq monitor, the same as the other or can I buy any brand monitor.

Any decent monitor ought to work perfectly.

Do you happen to know the specification of the graphics card inside the PC? Reason I ask this is that it may not be particularly good, and you would waste money purchasing a more powerful monitor than your graphics card could drive...
Whist true, on the other hand the monitor will probably be able to cope with the best the card can throw at it; and if the PC gets replaced in a few years, one might be glad of the better spec monitor, so long as one hasn't gone overboard.
Ont so sure about that, OG. A lot of older, cheaper adaptors can't produce the correct aspect ratio at the native resolution of wide screen monitors, and the result is a distorted and blobby picture.
