You just get a feel for a car when driving it. I had a 206 as a courtesy car once and I didn't find it terribly bad. If I owned one and it went wrong all the time I may say otherwise but in the 48 hours I had one I had no complaints. I do have complaints about the Kia Cee'd which although being only 120km old had lots of things not working and plenty of squeaks and rattles, and...

the build quilaity refers to the wy the car feels as stated .
when you get into a car and drive it . if it feels solid yet responsive and no shuddering rattles bangs oe what have you you consider its quality is good.
in reverse you would think the build quality is bad on this car if the door dropped when opened and had to be slammed when shut " to actual yshut it " or if the whole thing felt like it was going tip over going round a roundabout at 5 miles an hour .
cars are like computers they are made up of many different parts all designed to do their own little job . how they fit and work alongside each other and how well designed to work within the given space a car gives , and obviously how well " put together " they are denotes their build quality.

Build quality to me is the quality of the plastics, the closeness of shutlines in the bodywork, the smoothness of the engine, and many other points.
Take a cheap brand, it has nasty rattley plastic on the dashboard, large gaps between the doors and bodywork, rough engine and develops rattles and squeaks before it's a few years old.
Sit in a 1990's BMW on the otherhand and the shutlines are narrow, the engine is still smooth (even the 4 cylinder) and the dashboard plastics are still black (not grey!).
I would opt for a decent built older car rather than a new car everytime.
