Acer & Norton360 on go slow
5 Answers
I've recently upgraded my laptop to an Acer 7736G (my 3rd Acer over the last 7-8years) Very happy with the laptop as always - however it becomes extremely slow if not freezes completely at least once a day - this happens when Norton360 "is performing background tasks" as per the dialogue box in bottom right of screen. Is this the cause ? If so what, if anything can I do ?

1) Download AVG Free: http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage, but don't install it yet.
2) Disconnect your computer from the Internet, either by unplugging the its network cable or by switching off your wi-fi network...
3) Uninstall Norton. HOWEVER, be fully prepared for the fact that you may not be able to uninstall it completely. Norton products are infamous for being next to impossible to get rid of...
4) Still disconnected from the Internet, install AVG which you downloaded earlier. Ignore its nagging that it can't update itself because it can't find an Internet connection.
5) Once it's installed, and still disconnected from the Internet, allow AVG to perform a *COMPLETE* scan of your machine. If it finds anything on your machine which it thinks shouldn't be there, do whatever it suggests in order to remove it.
6) After the scan is complete, connect back to the Internet and reboot the machine.
7) Go into AVG, click Tools, Update and allow AVG to update itself.
8) Do a Windows update.

"Very simple. Norton products these days are total garbage"
No, norton products were garbage about 2 years ago when they totally lost sight of what users needs are with anti virus, just lately they have got their act together again and they are one of the lowest overal resource users out of all the AV options these days (they also won best AV product of 2009)
angrit1969, just set the scheduled scan to run at a time when you are not going to be using the computer as it's the scan that is causing the computer to run slow, and any AV product will slow a computer right down if it's trying to do a full scan while you're using it.
