Ages ago I read a book about a man who lives alone in a cabin in the woods with only his books for company, and a dog he loves. The story is told in his voice in a wonderful old fashioned almost biblical prose style, although it is a contemporary novel. Anyway, he falls in love, but the woman leaves him and later his dog is murdered. He goes off the rails and, I think, he murders the woman and her man. I gave the book away and it is driving me nuts trying to remember what it is called. It was set in a very snowy wintertime. I think it might be a man's name in the title - Jeremiah or something? Help, please! I think it could be american, but again, I am not sure.
