neighbours dog continual barking when on it's own.

Next door moved in in October with 2 big dogs, one of them barks all day when they are out and my son works late shifts into the early hours and so sleeps in till early afternoon. I'm on my day off today and it started barking at 7.30. I know the neighbours have been in and out all day today and soon as they go out the dog starts to bark. I can;t understand why it does this when it has another dog for company.
is there anything they should be doing to stop their dog barking when they leave it alone? i guess the poor thing is stressed or agitated in his new home.
When we moved here 18 months ago, my cat changed from being a half ferrel outdoor cat into a fireside purring machine! So i know how different houses can afect an animal .
I doubt the people know that the dog is barking so much. I can't decide how to approach the subject with them either as they are strangers to me too.

Try friendly option first. Call round and ask if you can help with the dogs at all as you have noticed the one is barking anxiously once they leave.... if amiable - sorted - even if dont take you up on offer - they will know there is a problem. Second option - speak to local council office if either of your homes are council property there is a proper process for this type of nuisance noise. All else fails ask the local community support bobby to walk past to understand your situation. It does need to be sorted for dog and your sanity.
A neighbour once complained about my mum's dog barking to the local council .She was mortified that they had gone behind her back so sneakily, she would have been more than willing to sort the problem. Try the direct friendly approach, then bring in the big guns if that doesn't work , you dont know that they will respond badly.
I think that any dog owner who is realistic realises that barking with they are out is a possible problem. I used to worry about it when I first left home but I was lucky in that my dog was quiet all day - except Postie time!
Dog barking is one of those noises that can drive you nuts - hopefully your neighbours are reasonable people and it can be resolved without any trouble.

I have such a dog. He gets serperation anxiety.
It is a common problem for dogs being pack animals and needing to be in a group.
I put on a video cam one afternoon when I went out because my neighbor complained that he barked, just so I could assess exactly what he was doing and take action if I thought he was going over the top.
He would bark for about 15 minutes after we left. He then got on the sofa a promptly threw the cushions on the floor and had a child like tantrum before disappearing up the stairs and waiting til we returned about an hour later.
In that time he only barked when a car went past the house and there was a lot of grumbling from the stair way as well. But not loud barking.
I could see that this might be a problem even though he didn't bark continuosly, as some people, once awakened cannot get back to sleep. Apart from this He is a great dog. Before we go out though he does get himself into a state and starts shaking and this combined with the barking made me get him a herbal remedy to calm him down. It worked a treat. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called but if they acknowledge a problem they might like to know that if they go to a pet shop these remedies are available. If it doesn't work a vets is the next step.

I would try to have a word dot, they may not know that he is barking when they are not there, and may be grateful that you are being up front and making them aware of the problem, if not, at leat you tried! and you need to go down a different route........but you need to sort it..................good luck with it.................wesh
You could try a sonic device, they let out an ultrasonic sound when the dog barks that only dogs can hear, so you wouldn't be disturbed. It only sounds when the dog barks and as dogs don't like the noise, they quickly learn to stop barking. I think you can get one that sits on the fence between houses which is good when it's your neighbour's dog and not your own.
When I first got my dog he wouldn't stop barking, had to get used to us I suppose, but it did get tiresome. I got a sonic collar for him from this company:

I think they have a range so you could have a look and see if there's something suitable for you. I was very pleased with mine.
Good luck!
