Dambusters Trip Möhne Dam
4 Answers
I am going to a wedding in October in Germany. We are flying into Dusseldorf and staying in a place called Altena. Looking at a map it seems that the Möhne Dam is quite nearby. Has anyone already visited this Dam? I know it was targeted in the Dambusters raid in the second world war and so I am quite interested in visiting. Also we would probably arrive around lunch time so if anyone can recommed somewhere cheap but good to eat (even what to eat) I would appreciate it.

There is car parking and a small cafe at the north end of the dam, which is the point of access by road. I ate in the cafe and if I remember correctly it was ok, clean and cheap enough, but nothing special: that was about eight or nine years ago. You can walk across the dam and there is a park area below it where you can also walk.
From Altena it will be about 50-60 km by road (my estimate from map)
Hope this helps

Thank you Acrosticus. Just got back from the trip. We did visit the Dam. It was really nice. Although the Dam was closed for repair (hope there was not another raid overnight!) so we could not go across it. But the park was really nice and took a few photos. I did go the to restaurant you said about as parking was 5 euros which you can claim against the price of a meal at the restaurant. It was lunch time so that was fine. By the way don't they drive fast on the motorways in Germany?
