Not doing very well on right side of grid yet. Is 2a Where Jack whacked upright spike with line (11) 'Whitechapel' ('Jack whacked' as bridge allusion, 'upright spike' as chapel, but where the extra line?)?If I can feel comfortable with this, I will be able to move forward!!

a spike is a chape + L line

Many thanks! A 'spike' is also someone 'high church' - did not find 'chape'!
Bradfords Dictionary gives a spike as (chape )
