do you know the rhym about magpies, ie. one for sorrow, two for joy etc

OK I googled it and it is never, you are right kev.  I do think ready makes more sense.  And in yours shaney its Seven for a witch I can tell you no more.  I really need to get a life I have too much time on my hands.

Bit obscure really peri...ten magpies for the devil himself I suppose!! I expect it means if you ever saw ten magpies all together in one place the devil would appear.
It's a load of old rubbish of course but the magpie is supposed to be the only bird that didn't go into Noah's Ark.It just sat on top of the Ark swearing at him!!

i was trawling the net for answers to the same question so i decided to share what i found.. perhaps this'll clear things up :)

i've found 3 versions, as follows;

One for sorrow, Two for mirth,

Seven for a witch -- I can tell you no more.

Hi,
I have seen ten magpies on 3 occasions over the past 2 days and on the last time they were sitting on my neighbours roof. I have looked into the ten magpies and have found overall that 'ten is a bird the cannot be missed' but what the hell does this mean ???
