My wife and I both have a credit card each. The APR on my credit card is 6% whilst hers is 21%. I tried to negotiate with HSBC to reduce her APR but they won't do it so would now like to use my credit card to pay of her credit card. Firstly is there a way I can do this without having to withdraw cash from the bank's ATM and then deposit the cash in her account to pay her card off? I would have thought that I could transfer the money easily over to her. Secondly, do you think that there would be a issues with doing this in terms of my credit rating? I know that I will be in more debt but would be paying it off twice as fast?
This is called "balance transfer" - all credit card companies offer this. Just log onto your credit card's online banking system and look for that option - it's almost certainly displayed prominently, because every credit card company would like you to transfer all of your other card balances to them. Once you find it, just follow the instructions.
Alternatively, just ring them up and they'll do it over the phone.
There is nothing to stop you doing a balance transfer to another card whenever you want, so if you get a 0% interest for a length of time when it runs out transfer to another 0%.
