How many people work for Birmingham City Council?

I asked my partner this question and she replied 2,000.

If I did not know the answer already, I would have thought that a reasonable guess.

But apparently the answer is 52,000 – I only know this because they have announced that they are considering reducing the number by 2,000.

If I were leader of Birmingham City Council, the number would be reduced by 50,000.

2000 wouldn't be many, think of all the schools, colleges and libraries, they must employ loads of people! Admittedly wouldn't have guessed 52,000 though!

Birmingham City Council is the largest Local Authority in Europe.
It employs a staff of around 60,000 of which around 41,000 are full-time.
