real or fake pearls

How can you tell if pearls are real? I'm sure there is some way of telling using your teeth (yes, really) but I don't know how.

You run the pearl across your teeth. When real pearl are growing sand gets into them so they feel gritty on your teeth, cultures ones just feel smooth.

WendyW's absolutely right, i was told exactly the same once by a reputable jeweller.

I'm told there is a simple test; Real pearls dissolve in vinegar. !
