North Devon Internet
4 Answers
Hi. My parents are lucky enough to live in the middle of nowhere in North Devon. However my dad wants the internet (at 80 its not too late to start!!!), but I cant find an internet provider as a result! I need to find someone who can say what package he should look at. I have tried all the phone shops looking for a 'dongle' etc but reception is very poor where he is (or so they say). He is on BT. Do they do dial up at a push? Would be great to get him connected to a reliable provider but preferably not dial up. Thank you one and all.

Is that because the local exchange is still not broadband-enabled or simply because it's too far away from your parents' home? (Have you actually checked with BT?).
If you're certain that your parents' phone line can't support an ADSL modem, you're stuck with choosing between a service connected over a mobile phone network (which you say is unreliable in the area) or using dial-up. Most ISPs still offer dial-up, including BT:

Your other alternative is satellite broadband. Setup costs are pretty high (£600 +) but speeds and running costs are similar to 3g phone services via dongle. Have a look at http://www.satsig.net...tellite-broadband.htm
