For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.These sound like Herring Gulls and they do make a terrible noise, but there is really not a lot you can do except of course deter anyone who throws out bread for them as this encourages many more to join in the chorus! (You won't, but a lot of people do feed them) Gardens are easy pickings for these scavengers and they are bright enough to hang around for any scraps taking up residence on roofs and just keeping an eye on things...
Also this time of year the youngsters are trying out their wings and of course all the family join in with cries of encouragement - so this will increase the volume by a few decibels. As all UK birds are protected only a licensed marksman is able to remove them permanently - and then it has to be a very special case. Not a lot of help really - they are just oportunists.
