Noisy Seagulls

why are seagulls particularly noisy at this time of year?  A few of the noisy little beggers have taken residency on the block of flats opposite me and keep me up half the night with their squealing.  Is this going to continue for the rest of the year?  Also any humane suggestions on what I could do to shut them up?

The young seagulls are at their 'hang around street corners with hoodies on, spitting and drinking White Lightening' phase of life, so they are going to be a bit boisterous.  If you live by the sea, as I do, then avoiding seagulls just is not going to happen.  Just don't make them welcome.  If they are a serious nuisance, inform the Environmental Health Department. (Who'll just nod in agreement...)

These sound like Herring Gulls and they do make a terrible noise, but there is really not a lot you can do except of course deter anyone who throws out bread for them as this  encourages many more to join in the chorus! (You won't, but a lot of people do feed them)  Gardens are easy pickings for these scavengers and they are bright enough to hang around for any scraps taking up residence on roofs and just keeping an eye on things...

Also this time of year the youngsters are trying out their wings and of course all the family join in with cries of encouragement - so this will increase the volume by a few decibels. As all UK birds are protected only a licensed marksman is able to remove them permanently - and then it has to be a very special case. Not a lot of help really - they are just  oportunists.

Thanks for your replies at least it gives me a wee bit o understanding about our feathered friends.  Since Ive posted this Ive invested in a set of earplugs so Im going to throw the earplugs at them in the hope that they'll go away
