I seem to recall that you could opt for either 3 or 4 star accommodation along the way. I very much enjoyed the holiday and would recommend the route (a number of tour operators cover the same cities/locations).
The holiday is available as either a fly drive or an escorted tour. The escorted tour was more expensive than the fly drive (but maybe about the same when you take into account the cost of the gas). But on an escorted tour, you are stuck with the timing of the tour bus – whereas with a hire car if you don’t much like a location, drive on – or linger a while at places you like.
An escorted tour would not appeal to me – a bit too much like being a prisoner, told what to do and when.

We did the West Coast coach tour with Titan tours a couple of years ago, it was excellent. LA, San Diego, Monterey, Phoenix, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Yosemite, Big Sur and back to LA via Hollywood and San Fransisco, and several others I can't remember!
We had a really good tour guide, and learnt so much more than if we'd gone on our own.
Downside is living out of suitcases, and early starts, but really well worth it. It's a good way to cover a lot of ground, and perhaps get an idea where to go back to, and where to avoid.
