A parakeet is defined as "any of numerous small slender long-tailed parrots". There are many different kinds of parakeets, including Ringnecks, Plumheads and Alexandrines. Unless the orininal poster tell us exactly what species of parakeet he/she has, it is difficult to advise on anything.
In America, they always refer to budgies as parakeets and sell them as parakeets, which is why I assume the poster was referring to a budgie, as it is what they are commonly refered to.
londondave is right, there are many types of parakeets including budgies. He's right about the sexing between the male and female too. The male budgie has a blue or purpleish cere (which is the "nose" area). The Female has a brown or pinkish color cere.
mystress- sexing an umbrella cockatoo is simple, they are not a bird that has to be surgically sexed. Female cockatoos have brown eyes and make cockatoos have black eyes.
Not all birds in the parrot family need to be surgically sexed, but yes some do (amazons for one do need to be surgically sexed).
