Ref James Carney the bare knuckle fighter. I took your advice craft1948 and sent for a birth certificate to Birmingham Register office. There were 2 dates 5 nov 1856 and 5 Nov 1857 I chose the 1856 on
6d 103. but they returned it to say the dates did not match. I can only presume the actual day 5 nov was
incorrect. I shall of course reapply without putting the 5 Nov on the form. My problem now is which year.
Any suggestions Thank you

Go down the options and click the birth certificate box.
Go down to the bottom and where it says..Is the General Register Office Index known click Yes
In the year box type 1856
Press submit
On the next screen just check that your personal details, name, address etc are right
and press submit
On the next screen fill in the name as requested
In the Quarter box select Oct, Nov, Dec from the drop-down
In District type Birmingham

You don't need to check anything elso so just scroll down and press submit
This will then take you to a page which shows what is in your basket, you can add more certificates or go to checkout.....then just follow the payment instructions.

oh sorry ironmonger I should have read your post better....I didn't realise you'd visited the local office as I always get mine from the GRO.
All you need to tell them is he was born Birmingham Q4 Volume 6d page 103 I assume.
I always get mine for £7.00 from here....https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ce
