Effects of citalopram anti-depressants
9 Answers
Ive been depressed for about 3 or 4 months, finally plucked up the courage to speak to my doctor a few weeks ago, explained the symptoms and was diagnosed as severely depressed and after discussion was prescribed Citalopram
At first I felt a lot worse, angry, suicidal, insomnia were the main things, but I was told to expect to feel worse at first
Now after about 2 weeks, i feel completely nonchulant, is this normal? I expected to feel better, but I dont, I just dont feel anything, I dont feel happy or sad or angry, just nothing?
It sounds really odd but I just kinda feel like im not even here, im drifting through, has anybody else had similar experiences?

I've been on these a couple of times and they do work. It's a little nerve-wracking when you come off them as it can take a while getting used to having emotions again, but I would recommend sticking with them.
im on citalopram, i started them about last october and they took about 4 weeks before they made me feel better. im in a situation which is out of my control and is making me very depressed as i dont know how it will be resolved.
After about 4 weeks they started to calm my mind and I feel i can cope much better now. Cant say im nonchulant, but it has made me feel more numb compared with before. When I started taking them they didnt make me feel worse, they just didnt work as fast as I wanted them to.
If you were angry and suicidal and you now feel nonchulant i would say thats a much better frame of mind to be in than you were before.
Im on 10mg which is the lowest, you may be on a higher dosage which could be reviewed by your doctor if he feels you need it.

Citalopram made me feel exactly the same, couldn't care less about anything, or anyone-went down really well with the family, didn't give a damn about them! When I came off them, it took a while to adjust, I had to be weaned off them by taking them every other day, then every 2 days, etc. They certainly worked.
I recently came off citalopram after three years. The withdrawal was quite unpleasant, dizziness, irritability, nausea. I never had any trouble when I started taking them and felt a lot better after three weeks. However as a heavy drinker I found the positive effects of citalopram greatly decreased when I started drinking again. I strongly recommend that you do not drink alcohol whilst on this medication.
