I tested the plugs with test light and yup those blighters on are on all the time. The glow plug light on the dashboard runs on a separate circuit to the plugs themselves so even though the dash light goes off after a few seconds the plugs stay on.
TWR thankyou for your tip. If I had a handbook with that snippet of information in it do you really think I'd ask the question on here.

Wish I could help you - I've got the same problem with my Jeep Cherokee (Renault 2.0 L diesel engine). Trying to figure out why the battery isn't charging properly (the alternator seems OK) and goes flat if I leave the ignition on too long without the motor running. I then discovered that the 2 glow-plug relays are getting very hot even though the pre-heating light on the dashboard is off. I concluded the relays aren't switching off, therefore also the plugs, and thus draining the battery, but why? What controls the relays?
Can anybody give me a pointer please?

i had the same problem, on combo, corsa van...glow plugs stayed of for 5, 6 mins, until the (engine is hot now sensor) turned them off. This over rides normal glowplug timer as you dont need glow with hot engine. After much trouble and trying a new timer unit i found the fault was the altenator.....believe it or not if the alternator warning lite lead is disconected, or the altenator goes on the blink the glowplugs stay on...odd fact
