Why can't he say that short speech? It's genuine and heart-felt. Why must he say more than he's comfortable with, or use other people's words? What he is wanting to say sounds perfect.

i totally agree with you, but he wants to make it longer and throw a few jokes in, he has a wicked sense of humour, but wanted a bit of help in that department.
There is a set format he can follow that would include a formal welcome to the guests, a thankyou for their gifts and good wishes, as the brides father would do based on the tradition that he would pay for it, then a brides father would express his delight at the choice of son in law and make noises about losing a daughter and gaining a son,

Your son could adapt that concept to your own wedding and make a very humorous and endearing speech!

lol very true dot, thank you so much for the advice and link :-)
A simple boost to his confidence standing up infront of a few dozen people is to book him 6 sunbed sessions over the week or two before to give him a subtle tan that will mask his blushes
Send him to the library, they should have books on giving speeches at weddings.
Why does he have to do it?
If he's really nervous then it will spoil his day and it should be a lovely occasion so why not let him off the hook. I'm not into marriage or it's protocol but why can't you both just enjoy yourselves?

he wants to do it
Ok sorry,I thought it sounded like he HAD to to it and he was nervous and didn't really want to do it.Apologies.A stiff drink might help just before (one!)

lol no worries, ye probably a pint or two will help him on his way! il let u all know how it goes! thanks everyone
My little brother was my best man. He was bricking it before the speech and had a 'few' drinks to calm him down. By the time he got up he'd drunk about 4 pints, half a bottle of sherry and several whiskeys.

The speech was brilliant. He swapped between whispering and shouting, fluffed all his lines, dropped his cue cards, used my ex-gf's name for my wife, forgot my name, then gave up towards the end and started crying. I don't think i've ever laughed so much in my life.

And just so you don't think i'm a totally heartless b'stard, I rescued him when the tears started to flow, finished the toasts. got him some grub and set him up with one of the bridesmaids.
