I travel north at least once a year up to Grantown on Spey which is about 15 miles from Aviemore very nice town with friendly people. The Highland wildlife safari park is 10 minutes south of Aviemore with a very good range of animals such as bison, wolves otters, lynx and many others. There is the finicular railway which takes you up the cairngorm mountains to the highest cafe in Britain where the views are quite stunning, this is also about 10 minutes from Aviemore. The steam railway from Aviemore will take you into Boat of Garten past the golf course where there is an osprey centre and the golf course if you do play golf you are spoiled for choice as there is excellent courses in almost every town.
Nairn is about 1 hours drive away but well worth the trip it has a cracking beach and at this time of year there is normally a fairground or 15 minutes from there you can visit the baxter soup centre and spey bay if you like looking for dolphins.Aviemore has a tourist information centre as you come into the town and almost every shop or pub has brochures of what's on that month.
If you are travelling by car take the A9 going up with a stop off at Pitlochry and take the scenic road on the way home which takes you through Fort William,Glencoe and Ben Nevis
Have a great holiday I'M sure you will
