BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH!!!

My partner is in a foul mood so please help.... He turns on his computer, the screen goes as far as the log on screen then goes black, he can still move the cursor though, he tries to put it in safe mode and still the black screen is there, he has tried using a product recovery cd rom and still nothing, it comes up with hit R so he does, then it advises to type EXIT which again he does and again the same thing, this blasted black screen. Any suggestions what might be wrong with it please?

Hes now stomped out the room, slammed the computer desk door and now playing on the XBox, I dare not tell him not to break that either.... I think there would be blood shed
