why does my 500 gig portable western digital hard drive not be recognised by my sumvision cyclone media player. when my 360 gig is recognised

Probably formated using a different file systems.

I'd guess the 500GB is NTFS and the 320GB is FAT32

Plug the drive into a computer, right click on it and select properties and it will say what the file system for the drive is.

Looks good chuck,
I did what you said and it does show its not fat files, ill have to find another comp to reformat it as i dont have admin rights on this one so it wont let me re format,

It's not that simple.

Windows won't let you format a partition (or drive) over 32GB in FAT32 (microsoft wrote a limitation into windows to try and force everyone to use NTFS. Which, as you've just discovered, doesn't work with other devices) if you know anyone with a linux computer you could ask them to format it (or see if you can format it using the media player)

otherwise have a look here, there are a couple of suggestions for formatting over 32GB, i'd go for the dos one first.
