you can buy filtered hoods where the steam / smoke etc is filtered through carbon.

you dont need to duct to the outside then

you need to watch out for a "recirculated air" hood
Yes...you get one with a charcoal filter. Mine is really good. The filters cost about £25 (mine is a double extractor) and the kitchen fitter reckons they will last up to a year or so.
True that a charcoal filter removes the food smells.
But the water vapour just gets lobbed back into the kitchen.
Where else do you clever ladies think it goes?
Doesn't seem to be a problem in our kitchen Builder.
If at all possible, I'd seriously consider a through the wall job, as buildersmate says, that will ensure all steam and smells are vented out, with the added plus that you won't need any filter at all, thus saving you money, year after year.
I got mine vented through the side wall of the kitchen, much better as it stops your kitchen steaming up.

Mind you as I live in a terraced house the neighbours were furious!

There you are ladies!
Just a few comments from my supporters.
Need any more convincing?
We have a hole through the wall and also have to change a filter every 3 months because they clog up and get very greasy if you don`t change them. So today we have just bought a new one, which will also extract through the wall.
do your homework, you would be amazed at how much noise some of the cheaper ones make....speaking from experience !!!
Well I've got good ventilation Builder so have never had a problem with steam/condensation.
Buildersmate, i dont need convincing ta very much. My cooker hood is extracted outside. I ensureed that i could duct from the cooker across all my wall cupboards and then down inside the last cupboard by the outside wall.

I was only answering the question, yes you can get one that doesnt need holes in wall cutting
